Nominated for the Swedish Photobook Prize (Svenska fotobokspriset), 2022

Editor: André Frère Éditions

In this book, Monika Macdonald focuses on the masculine. While her images echo classical pictorial iconography in their treatment of the nude, pose or light, she draws portraits that are far removed from the traditional representations of the virility and beauty of the men she observes.

“I am not so fond of the idea of taking pictures. But I always return to it. The sense of getting close to something that has no words. This is why I continue. I balance between different worlds that I am trying to relate to. My pictures are memories. To have access to the feeling of solitude and vulnerability. To be allowed beyond sanity, far away from what is called reality.” (Monika Macdonald)

The women portrayed in In Absence have one thing in common: their need to continue to live the solitary life and the intimate search for their own identity.

Monika Macdonald (b.1969) lives and works in Stockholm, Sweden.

Book available at Kehrer Verlag and La Boutique VU’ (special edition available).
